Emily Gregory
Named for the first female full professor at Columbia University, the Emily Gregory Award is Barnard's only student-nominated and selected teaching award. Each year, it acknowledges one Barnard faculty member for their teaching excellence and devotion, and service to Barnard students. Nomination is by students and selection by the Student-Faculty Committee of the Activities Council in conjunction with the Alumnae Association of Barnard College and the Office of College Activities.
Action
Committee Chair: Alexa Easter '23
The Action committee is based on community service and plans large and small- scale volunteer events for Barnard students. McAC Action provides a wonderful opportunity to get involved on campus and make a difference in the lives of others.
Each year, the Action Committee organizes a Service Fair to help Barnard students learn about the different service opportunities that are available in the area. Some of the committee’s other past events have included making cards for veterans, voter registration with New York City Civic Engagement Program (NYCCEP), and making holiday ornaments for nursing homes. Action has also collaborated with JWOC (Jewish Women on Campus) to decorate bags for an afterschool program at the Women In Need homeless shelter, and co-hosted a standardized test prep book drive with Columbia FLiP (First Generation Low-Income Partnership).
Community
Committee Co-Chair: Allison Lee '24
Committee Co-Chair: Kelly Peterson '23
The Community committee plans events that aim to build community between Barnard students on campus. Community is responsible for some of Barnard’s best-known traditions, including Midnight Breakfast and Big Sub.
Midnight Breakfast is a free breakfast hosted the midnight before finals week begins that is attended by hundreds of members of the Barnard and greater Columbia University community, and sports a different theme each semester. Big Sub is 700+ foot long subway sandwich that is assembled annually throughout Barnard’s campus. The sandwich accounts for nearly all dietary restrictions and is usually consumed by the student body in under 10 minutes.
Mosaic
Committee Chair: Isabel Stern '24
The Mosaic Committee, McAC’s newest committee, highlights and celebrates identities and cultures that are a part of our campus through innovative, and educational programming.
In the fall, Mosaic hosts Borough Backpacking, an event to highlight and encourage students to explore one of New York's boroughs. Mosaic also hosts World's Fair in the Spring, which highlights the diversity on Barnard and Columbia's campus with performances and activities from different clubs. Some past Mosaic events include an LGBTQ paint night, a celebration for Lunar New Year, and an Allergy Awareness Bakesale.
Network
Committee Chair: Marisol Uy '23
The Network committee is responsible for programming events that bring together student, alumnae, and faculty in creative, informal, and fun ways.
Each year, the Network Committee organizes the Emily Gregory Award Dinner, Staff Appreciation Week, and more! Emily Gregory is the only student-nominated faculty award at Barnard. In the past, Network has also hosted panels with Barnard alumnae.
Spirit Week
In the Spring semester, McIntosh Activities Council hosts Barnard's Spirit Week: a three-day-long event with the goal of celebrating the community at Barnard and bringing students together. This year, Spirit Week will take place from Tuesday, April 5th to Thursday, April 7th.
Wellness
Committee Chair: Madeline Holstrom '22
The Wellness committee is devoted to bringing Barnard students events promoting all types of wellness-- physical, mental, emotional, and sexual. Wellness is committed to relaxation, exercise, and happy living at Barnard!
The Wellness Committee’s signature event each semester is Yoga on the Roof, a free sunset yoga and smoothie session for students on the roof of the Diana Center. Other recent Wellness events included study breaks such as our Suc-seed study break, a Mocktails event in collaboration with Well Woman, and a nutrition event where students could make their own acai bowl and speak with a guest nutritionist.
